About
A sensational and extremely high quality French 19th century Louis XV St., kingwood and ormolu bureau plat and its matching desk chair, after a model by Charles Cressent, possibly by Francois Linke. Raised on handsome cabriole legs with fine pierced ormolu paw designed wraparound sabots. At each corner are large and impressive ormolu mounts of richly chased maidens and acanthus leaves. The front scalloped shaped frieze displays three drawers, each with intricate cube parquetry framed within an ormolu band. The central recessed drawer has a large striking ormolu keyhole escutcheon with a foliate pattern and a central family crest with a charming lattice design. Both side drawers are separated by gadroon shaped ormolu chutes and have rich foliate ormolu pulls and keyhole escutcheons. Each side panel is similarly decorated, centered by an extremely decorative and high quality female face, with foliate movements and berries in her hair. The back of the desk is finished with three faux drawers that mirror the front. Above is the original brown leather top framed within a reeded ormolu gallery with ormolu seashells at each corner.
The matching armchair is also raised by elegant cabriole legs and displays the same richly chased female maidens at each corner and elegant scrolled ormolu mounts at the back support. Upholstered in brown leather with brass nails.
Armchair dimensions: H: 30.75", L: 27", D: 23.5", seat height: 20".
The original bureau plat, created by Charles Cressent, was at the Palace of Versailles in 1919, upon which the signing of the Peace Treaty of the Great War was done.
