This Asian Style Black Solid Wood Cube Side Table in Shou Sugi Ban is simple and versatile. The sturdy "Hyo" Table is handcrafted from Alabama urban pine and "burned" using the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban finishing method. Use the Hyo Table as a side table or cluster for a coffee table. Set it in a screened in porch, covered patio or a modern, organic, eclectic or bohemian setting.
A field-to-studio company, Alabama Sawyer repurposes the finest wood species, reclaimed from our local urban forests, to create one of a kind furniture pieces and accessories for the home or business.
The color is the reaction of burning the pine. There is no stain, so the color may vary. The urban wood features variations inherent to salvaged materials such as a rustic distressed finish, visible knots, hairline cracks and natural stains, which may result in hue variations, rubbed edges, or other antique-like characteristics, that are part of the rustic beauty of these side tables. If the finish cracks or chips, you may see some pine underneath. This is the nature of natural materials and what our customers tell us they love about having urban wood in their home. This is a living finish. Natural materials and will age over time and with exposure to the elements—the more exposure, the quicker they will age. As with all wood, but especially a large solid volume, expansion and contraction due to temperature variability may occur.

Since we began in 2014, we have diverted hundreds of logs from the landfill by transforming them into award-winning furniture and products for homes and businesses. Instead of letting trees waste in a landfill, we gather them from municipalities, businesses and homeowners to give them a second life. Urban wood has character. Historically, felled city trees are taken to the landfill to decompose. Every year, Americans bury 4 billion board feet of usable hardwood trees in our city landfills. Using urban wood keeps them from releasing carbon back into the atmosphere where it contributes to climate change. Originating in 18th century Japan, shou sugi ban is a particularly striking method of preserving wood by charring it with fire. Traditionally, this practice is used with Japanese cedar in order to weatherproof it. The wood is burned until the surface is charred, and then coated with natural oil.

Our stumps all go through a drying process in our kiln, sometimes for up to a month. We are meticulous with bringing each and every log to a specific moisture level. This process helps with major cracking, long-term moisture issues, and bugs.
ECO FRIENDLY
In an effort to replenish the trees we use, we plant 50+ trees a year. In addition, we practice salvage logging. Where do we source these? Some of the trees fall naturally. Some have damage from severe wind, lightning, flood, disease, or other natural disturbance so they need to be cut and removed before they fall. Others are fresh cut because people want them off their land. Salvage logging may reduce erosion, reduce intensity of future wildfires, and slow buildup of pest insects.
