Ruffled White Porcelain Contemporary Wall Sculpture, Sara Dodd
About the Item
Decipher I, 2024 (Porcelain on board, framed, C. 39.4 in. diam. x 2 in. d, Object No.: 4254)
Dodd’s works are a symphony of light and texture, creating mesmerizing illusions of movement and flow. Her attention to detail and mastery of craft is apparent in the delicateness of her manipulation of porcelain, utilizing a unique layering technique. Dodd’s works are reminiscent of organic forms, such as rippling waves or coral, drawing inspiration from the natural world around her.
Dodd explains: ‘I paint intuitively with porcelain clay in its liquid form, slip, reimagining this traditional material into wafer thin strata of beauty, delicacy and strength. Working intuitively and meditatively, I layer these to create a canvas of pattern, contrast and harmony.
The luminosity and palette of the sky inspires me – whether a passing moment of sunlight hitting an object or a more detailed study at dusk or dawn. It could be a colour combination, or a quality of light. I keep my eyes open to discover and absorb the things that surround me. Light creates intimacy in my pieces – torn uneven edges of porcelain catch the light and are illuminated, while simultaneously casting shadow to the layer behind. This play of light draws the eye, directing it from one layer to the next’.

Sculptural Vase II, 2023, (Porcelain, C. 8.6 in. h x 8.2 in. diam., Object No.: 4185)
Davolio’s sophisticated porcelain works and their organic and natural references are influenced by the Art Nouveau style, the keen interest in the mechanics of futurism, and the minimalist and linear approach typical to Scandinavian Design.
In the past 15 years, Davolio has positioned herself as an internationally renowned ceramicist. J. Lohmann Gallery discovered this talented artist in Europe in 2007 and introduced Davolio’s work to the United States in 2008. She has developed a unique oeuvre over several decades that is unparalleled. Her work conveys a deep connection to nature, and in particular to the sea. Davolio herself reveals that she “feels deep devotion and passion while working” and experiences “wonderful peaceful moments when creating something new from raw clay” with her hands.
The elaborate porcelain sculptures and vessels suggest organic biomorphic forms, mostly aquatic shapes like coral reefs and undulating leaves. A graduate of The Danish School of Design, Davolio is influenced by the minimalist design aesthetic in Copenhagen, as can be seen in many of the artist’s unique and artistically important creations, in which a series of concentric lamellas emanate from the central column of a vase. She also draws inspiration from the ceramic traditions of ancient Mediterranean...
