About the Item

A most attractive complete set of twelve Italian 19th century Neo-Classical st. Marble, Ormolu and patinated Bronze plaques of The Twelve Caesars. Each wonderfully decorative plaque is centered by a richly chased profile of a Roman Emperor, including Julius Caesar, Tiberius, Nero and Titus, to name a few. The Emperors are showcased in intricate detail with Ormolu laurel crowns in their hair. Each patinated Bronze profile is set on a Sienna marble background surrounded by a Rosso Antico marble reserve at each corner. The plaques display thick and most impressive Black Belgian marble frames with mottled edges. Exceptional quality and extremely decorative. These stunning plaques pay tribute to the Roman emperors immortalized by the historian Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus in his seminal work De Vita Caesarum (The Lives of the Twelve Caesars), written in the early 2nd century AD. The series includes portraits of Julius Caesar and the first eleven Roman emperors, from Augustus to Domitian—each rendered in the timeless manner of ancient medallions and classical cameos.
