1962 Georges Braque “Gaia” Gouache on Black Paper for the Braque Jewels

About the Item

Georges Braque “Gaia”, 1962 Gouache on black drawing paper (measures: 22 x 28 cm) The Gouache comes with a “Certificate of Authenticity” established directly by Heger de Loewenfeld (Photo 3). Very rare source piece of “The Braque Jewels”, last project of the French Master painter, Georges Braque, who designed jewelry in the last three years of his life, from 1960-1963. At least 2 steps were necessary in the gouache production process. First, Georges Braque would choose a subject, taken from his major career works. Then Heger de Loewenfeld would execute the gouache under the direction of the master who would review the drawing, sign it a first time, and add an authorization (also signed) for the transposition of the piece into a jewel by Heger de Loewenfeld. When the jewel was ready, Heger de Loewenfeld would present it to Georges Braque, who would add his signature on the piece. Sometimes, this signature was reported on the gouache under the mention “Bon pour signature de la pièce”, also signed by Georges Braque. 30 of this gouaches were exhibited at the Palais du Louvre in Paris, in 1963, at the opening exhibition of “Bijoux de Braque”, from march to may 1963, according to the catalog of the exhibition (Photo 4, 5). There are approximatively 100 gouaches, listed in the book "Les Metamorphoses de Braque" by Heger de Loewenfeld and Raphael de Cuttoli (Photo 6).
