About the Item

This virtuosic pen-and-ink drawing shows several gods cavorting with wild-maned horses in an Art Deco galaxy. All the figures are perfectly stylized as if parading across a classical frieze, yet the scene is highly theatrical and energized. The artist, who did not sign his work, was a master of his medium, contrasting pitch-black areas of background with his snowy figures, and using carefully-applied stippling to convey shadow and nuance. The handmade frame is original, and the piece is in superb condition. (Dimensions include frame.)

Nash had established his own press 10 years before, and was dubbed by one admirer "The Aldus of San Francisco."
