"Looking Heavenward, " Ink Drawing with Male Nude by Harlem Renaissance Artist
About the Item
This extraordinary drawing produced by one of the great artists associated with the Harlem Renaissance depicts a nude male figure leaning against an icy slope and looking heavenward. The artist was Charles Cullen, who played a very important role in illustrating several volumes associated with Black writers in the 1920s and 1930s, most especially Countee Cullen (no relation to Charles). Countee was a writer and poet who produced several important works, including "The Black Christ and Other Poems," "Copper Sun" and "Color," and was probably one of the more prominent gay members of the Renaissance. Charles Cullen produced a masterful series of gorgeous Art Deco drawings that depicted the male figure in a sensuous, sometimes homoerotic manner for Countee's books and later went further, depicting nude males for a 1933 edition of "Leaves of Grass" and the scandalous publication of "Mimes of the Courtsans" in 1928. (Dimensions include matte).

- "Nude Archer, " Bold Ink Drawing with Male Nude, Influenced by KlimtBy Erwin StolzLocated in Philadelphia, PABold and atmospheric, this ink drawing depicts a kneeling nude male figure, his bow arched and his arrow ready to spring forward, surrounded by a flower-bedecked landscape that clearly draws its inspiration from Gustav Klimt's work. To the left, silhouetted against the dark background, a pair of stylized geese -- evidently his target -- are shown flying upward. The sun which dapples the figure of the archer highlights his lithe musculature, and the artist -- Erwin Stolz -- gives the same close attention to the landscape behind. Stolz was well connected to the artistic elite of Vienna, and was friends with Alexander Rothaug...Category

- "Two Nudes with Columned Facade, " Art Deco Drawing w/ Male Nudes, EnglandLocated in Philadelphia, PABeautifully drawn, clearly by an important artist, this depiction of two nude male figures sitting in the foreground of a columned facade -- perhaps alluding to the Classical sculpture of ancient Greece -- is not signed, perhaps due to the subtly homoerotic nature of the scene. The two figures have the solidity and gravity of high style Art Deco art, and may represent the academic, early work of a great master such as Glyn Philpot or John Craxton...Category
