About the Item
This idealized view of a Greek city of cliffside temples and columned walls climbing a craggy mountain is also the depiction of a homophile Shangri-La, where lithe nude male figures linger along the colonnades, and nude sculptures -- again of male figures -- look over the cityscape toward the sea. Goor was famous for illustrating a number of books by Roger Peyrefitte and others in France, some with a gay thread or theme, and indeed the reverse of this drawing retains a label indicating that this piece was in Peyrefitte's personal collection. Goor was deeply influenced by the paintings he found at the Louvre in his youth, and his work often depicts male figures with an implicit, or sometimes explicit, homoerotic theme. Goor also designed vases for the famous Sevres porcelain works, as well as for the Mougin pottery company in France. The drawing is pastel on paper.
