About the Item

This extraordinary, almost surreal scene by one of America's leading muralists in the Art Deco period, Eugene Savage, depicts a floating female nude on the stage, with figures of Comedy and Tragedy blowing trumpets to her right, theater curtains framing the scene, and suggestions of celestial orbs and the larger universe beyond. Savage is best known for a spectacular set of murals he painted to illustrate the history and lore of Hawaii commissioned by Matson Shipping Line for the S. S. Lurline, executed in the 1940s but not installed until the 1950s. He also painted a set of enormous murals for the Great Hall in the Texas Hall of State, the centerpiece of Fair Park in Dallas, built to celebrate the Texas Centennial in 1936. Savage was a prolific painter and muralist, executing works for public buildings in Chicago, Pennsylvania and Indiana, and for Columbia and Yale Universities. This painting may have been a study for one of Savage's murals. The medium is oil on board.
