"Ninth Symphony", Art Deco Paean to Beethoven's Masterpiece by Renowned Muralist
About the Item
Filled with Sturm und Drang and packed with allegory and higher meaning, this remarkable Art Deco painting by Eugene Savage celebrates and interprets Beethoven's greatest work -- the Ninth Symphony. One of a series of paintings by Savage interpreting great Classical masterpieces -- this gallery offers two others which address Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and Debussy's "Afternoon of a Faun" -- this painting uses jewel-toned color and dramatic scenes to tell the story. A central half-nude female figure is perched on a platform supported by crystalline mountains with sheer cliff walls, below which the sea boils and a volcano erupts, and above which a calm blue sky presides. A blue-toned nude male figure is supporting the clouds toward the top of the painting, and a long line of human figures are ascending a ramp which disappears into the upper reaches of the painting. Savage was, arguably, America's most successful and prolific muralist in the Art Deco style, with important surviving paintings dating from the 1920s to the 1950s. He is best known for a spectacular set of murals illustrating the history and lore of Hawaii commissioned by Matson Shipping Line for the S.S. Lurline, executed in the 1940s but not installed until the 1950s. The artist also painted other series of murals and paintings, including an enormous mural for the Texas Centennial Buildings in Dallas, a group for the Elks National Memorial in Chicago, and a series celebrating the Seminole Indians and their home in the Everglades, now held by the Cummer Museum in Jacksonville. He also executed works for other public buildings in Chicago and Indiana, and for Columbia and Yale Universities. The painting is signed in the lower right, and retains its original applied label. Dimensions include matte and frame; visible painting is 41 inches high by 24 inches wide.

"Plowing at Sunrise, " Art Deco Paean to the Black Farmer, 1930s
By Willis Lohse
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Beautifully conceived, dramatically set and very finely painted, this gouache and ink painting by Willis R. Lohse is a paean to the hard work and nobility of the black farmer in America, hat in hand as he marvels at the beauty of the day. Full of lovely colors -- lemon yellow, cerulean and fresh green -- Lohse captures a lovely moment where the farmer pauses to look upward, amidst sprays of birch trees and expanses of rolling fields. Lohse was a German-American artist who is best known for his illustrations for fiction and fantasy books published between the 1920s and 1950s, including "The Boy Who Found the King," "Raff, the Jungle Bird...

"Pipe Fitters", 1951 Paean to the Working Man by Gere, Wisconsin Painter
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Although this painting dates to 1951, a few years after the Works Progress Administration (WPA) period ended in the 1940s, this tight composition of two pipe fitters doing their work in a cramped space is very much akin to America's Depression-era murals that celebrated the American worker. The painter was Byron Gere...
