"Nudes Among the Ruins, " Vivid Mural Study with Male Nudes by Allyn Cox
About the Item
This sun-drenched scene, drawn with a vivid palette of bright Mediterranean blues and chalk whites, shows a pattern of gridding by the artist, indicating that this drawing served as a preparatory sketch for a mural, probably for a domestic setting. Two male nudes are shown among Greek or Roman ruins at the edge of the Mediterranean Sea, a favorite theme of classically-minded artists in the 20th century. Cox spent 20 years painting and restoring murals at the US Capitol in Washington, D.C. starting in 1952; among his accomplishments was painting the Frieze of American history and restoring the apotheosis of Washington in the Rotunda. He also designed murals for three first-floor corridors in the house wing, now called the Cox Corridors.
