"Nudes in Cubist Landscape," Drawing by Glidden Parker, Founder, Glidden Pottery

About

A classic example of 1930s drawing showing the influence of Cubism and Art Deco design, this depiction of a nude couple standing in a landscape with fractured hills and clouds was created by Glidden Parker, most famous for his influence on modern ceramics and home design. Parker's stripped-down, geometric forms for tableware and decorative ware became widely popular in the 1940s and 1950s, and his earliest pieces sometimes have Art Deco decorative motifs. This drawing precedes the establishment of Glidden Pottery by a couple of years, and belonged to Katherine Nelson, a good friend of Parker and a designer at the pottery for years. This drawing comes from a sketchbook maintained by Parker over several years, and is executed in pencil.
