In the background, we see a high base topped by a statue of a 19th century figure along with other architectural ruins.
Central to the composition is a leafy tree with a leaning trunk.
The beautiful flowering iris plant in the foreground gave the drawing its title.
The iris has a very long history, as it was known even at the time of the ancient Egyptians and other ancient peoples. It is well documented that in Europe the iris's rhizome was used as a linen perfume. It was named for Iris, the Greek messenger of the gods, who according to Greek mythology, had wings of gold shining with dew, which when lit by the sun rays were decked with all the colors of the rainbow. Also according to this legend, Iris was Juno's favourite goddess because she only bore good news. Juno decided to reward her by turning her into the iris (the rainbow) which was said to be the link between heaven and earth.

Andre Derain was born in Chatou France in 1880. He met Matisse early in his life but was conscripted into the French army in 1901. After his service and when released Matisse convinced his parents to allow him to stop training as an engineering student to develop his artistic talents. He devoted himself full time to painting and attended the Academie Julian. He developed his early important style with close friends Maurice de Vlaminck and Henri Matisse. This became known as Fauvism and helped to usher in the other modern movements in art throughout the 20th century. The pair of sheets, in good condition, is framed by antique frames in carved and gilded wood. They show some china studies with some studies for different subjects. Specifically, the first sheet represents the design of a frieze of Renaissance taste under which are some studies probably referring to a family coat of arms. Below the center is a monogram “A.M.”.
The sheet is also worked on the back in which are drawn some articulated elements of decoration in the style of the Renaissance grotesque...
