About the Item

Polyphem: Charcoal abstract, figurative drawing in black-red-white color on beige paper from Michel Batlle, signed 1987 Handworked frame, with white-gilded decoration, non-reflecting museums glass Biographiy Michel Batlle: Michel Batlle was born in Toulouse on April 3, 1946. His father had fled to France during the Spanish Civil War. Batlle begins making a name for himself in 1966 with “Psychophysiographie” – a term that describes the graphic representation of interrelations between the human mind and body (creating imaginary anatomies in which minds and bodies merge). From 1966 to 1969 the artist focuses on radiographic art and specially conceptualized photography. In 1970 he abandons abstraction in favor of a new Expressionist form of figural art. From 1971 to 1975 Batlle specializes in performance painting and land art, creating critical parodies on the eccentricities of the modern international art market. In 1980 he first issues the magazine “Axe Sud,” which centers on new figural art and English sculpture. During this period, Batlle’s work is closely related to the art of the “transavantgarde” movement. Up until the end of the 20th century, Batlle dedicates himself to humanist themes (e.g. in a series of works called “guerres culturelles”). He returns to strictly physical subjects in 2000. In keeping with his global spirit and intercultural attitude, the artist has studios in Toulouse and Niger (Agadez). The following institutions have purchased works by the artist: Fonds international d’art contemporain – Paris Kiev Museum – Ukraine Philbrook Museum – Tulsa, Oklahoma (USA) Museo de Olot – Girona (Spain) Museum of Modern Art – Belgrade (Serbia) Pinacoteca di Capo d’Orlando – Italy Institut français du Kyushu – Fukuoka (Japan).

Abstract Painting Beige-brown-orange by the Leipzig Painter W. Biedermann 1987
Located in Salzburg, AT
Abstract painting on paper work by Wolfgang E. Biedermann, Leipzig Westgermany 1987 Small, repetitive motifs, characters, ciphers and writings, inspired by Asian calligraphers were generously painted over in abstract. Technique: Mixed media on paper Signature: Lower right by hand W. E. Biedermann 87 Short Biography: Wolfgang E. Biedermann was born in 1940 in Hannover - dece. 2008 in Leipzig Already as a high school student Wolfgang E. Biedermann's artistic talent was recognized by Ursula Mattheuer-Neustädt. She promoted him to evening studies at the Academy of Visual Arts (HGB) Leipzig. From 1961 Biedermann studied at the HGB in the specialist class for free graphics and painting with Gerhard Kurt Müller, completing his studies in 1967. Since 1968 Biedermann was active as a freelance artist in Leipzig. He undertook study trips to Poland, France and Indonesia, as well as to the USSR and the USA. From 1968 to 1991 he was a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR and since 1996 a member of the Free Academy of Arts in Leipzig. The unique encounter with the German action artist Joseph Beuys had a great impact on Biedermann. The artistic work of Wolfgang E. Biedermann spanned from 1960 to 2008. His œuvre is characterized by the development of his own technique. In addition to drawings and sketches of the early work for study purposes he dealt over the years primarily with printing practices. He produced numerous abstract paintings and works on paper using color etching and silkscreen processes as well as multi-plate overprinting. Biedermann relied on different layering by means of various techniques of graphics and painting. He dealt extensively with overdrawing and overpainting his works. Repeating motifs are symbols, signs, ciphers and writings, which are based on Asian calligraphy. Biedermann dealt just as intensively with the content of philosophical writings by Peter Sloterdijk and with letters from the estate of Friedrich Schiller, which he transposed into the paintings. His color-intensive paintings reflect "inner landscapes". Klaus Werner coined this term as early as 1980 for the complete works of Wolfgang E. Biedermann. Since 1977 Wolfgang E. Biedermann presented his artworks at various exhibitions. On the occasion of his 50th birthday, the Lindenau Museum in Altenburg exhibited a comprehensive selection of 130 works in 1990. NordLB - Art, Hannover accompanied his further creative process for almost ten years with work locations in Berlin (Sony Center), Singapore, Zurich and Hamburg. At the EXPO 2000 in Hanover, twelve of his large-scale works were on display in the German pavilion. Parts of his œuvre have also been exhibited outside Germany in Tokyo, Paris, Damascus, Bilbao, Listovel, Mulhouse, Grenchen, Basel and Fredrikstad, among other places. Mixed Media on Paper and Wood Behind Aryl Glass Mimmo Paladino, Italy 2009
By Mimmo Paladino
Located in Salzburg, AT
Mixed media on paper and wood behind aryl glass Mimmo Paladino, Italy 2009 (2/20) Mimmo Paladino found art inspired by his uncle, a painter who introduced him to traditional techniques at an early age. After attending the 1964 Venice Biennale, he made the decision to become an artist. He studied painting at the Liceo Artistico in Benevento from 1964 to 1968 and, influenced by Max Ernst and Paul Klee, experimented with collages, frottages and non-objective paintings. In 1968 he finished his academic training with a diploma and began to paint freely. In the early to Mid-1970s, the artist dealt almost exclusively with mythological themes, such as the Icarus myth, which he translated into drawings. In the process, Paladino developed his own fresco-like technique, significant for his later work, in which he painted large-scale walls with pastel colors. Paladino had his first exhibition in 1977 at the "Galerie Lucio Amelio" in Naples. Several trips to Milan as well as contact with the art critic Tommaso Trini and the gallery owner Franco Toselli soon made Paladino known nationwide. In Toselli's gallery he presented his murals for the first time in 1978. That same year he traveled to New York, where he met Sandro Chia and Francesco Clemente. Several trips to Brazil followed. In 1980 Mimmo Paladino, together with the publisher Emilio Mazzoli, published a book with texts by Achille Bonito Oliva. The art critic Oliva had introduced the term Transavanguardia at the end of the 1970s for the style of the new movement, mainly characterized by young Italian artists such as Chia, Clemente, Enzo Cucchi and Paladino, who found parallels in Germany with the Neue Wilde. In the same year Paladino participated in the Aperto 80 Biennale in Venice and in 1982 in the Biennale of Sydney. In the following years Paladino had exhibitions at the Kunstmuseum in Basel and at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Bologna. In 1999 he had an extensive retrospective at the Lenbachhaus in Munich and in the same year he became an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London. The Centro per l'arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci in Prato dedicated an extensive retrospective to him in 2002/2003.[1] Works by Mimmo Paladino can be found in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) in Dublin, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The artist lives and works in Milan and Benevento, Italy. PLANT Mimmo Paladino's works are often mixed media on paper or wood pre-sketched with drawing pencil, using all traditional means. His oeuvre includes watercolor, oil painting, and tempera, as well as collage, frottage, engraving, drypoint, or woodcut. Paladino's paintings are often untitled. Examples 1987: The Perfect Room 1992: hortus conclusus, horse sculpture in Benevento, Chiostro di San Domenico 1993: montagna bianca 2002: Le chien 2004: ciclismo 2008: Porta di Lampedusa - Porta d'Europa, iron sculpture covered with ceramic plates on the beach of Lampedusa in memory of the migrants who lost their lives at sea EXHIBITIONS 1979: Transavanguardia, Turin 1980: Venice Biennale, Venice 1982: documenta 7, Kassel 1982: Biennale of Sydney, Sydney 1984: Merianpark, Basel, sculpture in the 20th century...
