Painting of 1600 Mary Magdalene: Iconography of the 17th and 18th centuries

Oil on canvas 70 x 57 cm
In this 1600s painting St. Mary Magdalene is portrayed as a young woman with long loose hair, soberly dressed, with only a tiara in the center of her chest. Depicted half-length, she holds a cross in her clasped hands in prayer while weeping. Below, on a table, are a jar of ointment, an open book resting on a skull, all bathed in deep darkness.
This is a typical image in the pictorial iconography of the saint from the 17th and 18th centuries. The well-crafted depiction is pictorially soft in shading and has a probable bright colorism, ready to resurface under yellowed paint. The work, mindful of Italian painting of the early 18th century, far from the great artistic centers, is distinguished by the great simplicity with which it was done, deserving appreciation.
