Title: Madonna with Child and Saint Anne between Saint Joseph and Saint Paul
Oil on canvas cm 195 x 140 (76,8 x 55,1 inches)
Large altarpiece, from the seventeenth century, appears as an original inserted in the Emilian-Lombard tradition of rich Baroque pictorial compositions.
The entire style closely resembles the well-known painter Giovanni Stefano Maria Danedi, also known as "il Montalto" (Treviglio, 1612 - Milan, 1690), directly linked to the great names of the seventeenth-century northern Italian area such as Morazzone, Procaccini, Cerano, Piola, Del Cairo, and indirectly to the Emilian school (Reni); in Montalto's works, large-scale works treated with the same strong chiaroscuro are very frequent, where the figures stand out as gleams against the deep darkness of the backgrounds, with the changing colors of the draperies moderating the contrast and pleasing the eye with juxtaposed tones.
Originally intended for a religious setting, as deduced from the coat of arms at the bottom left, from which one can trace back to the precise commission, it still maintains a charm and a highly appreciable pictorial quality even in private settings.
