Large Painting Saint Michael the Archangel by 19th-Century Neoclassical Painter

About the Item

Painting St. Michael the Archangel, by a neoclassical painter of the 1800s. Oil on canvas; 210 x 140 cm The painting with the large dimensions of an altarpiece, is an emblematic work of that pictorial academicism that lived especially in Italy and France from the mid-eighteenth century to the whole of the nineteenth century and beyond, which looked to classical models by reformulating and readjusting the already existing schemes of antiquity in search of an ideal beauty, therefore concentrating great attention to a well-detailed drawing and little relevance of objective reality. The beautiful Saint Michael is treated with a light painting with bright colors and clear, luminous tones that closely resembles the one made by Reni, certainly the most traditional and the one most reproduced by later artists, in which the saint is preparing to give the final blow to the devil lying under his feet, a figure, the latter, neglected in our representation to leave instead total space for the dynamism of the archangel. Neoclassical art once again draws on the art of the classical world. Around the middle of the 18th century, excavations that had unearthed entire cities such as Pompeii and Herculaneum renewed artists' interest in the study of Greek and Roman antiquities. Rome became the cultural center par excellence. The greatest theoretician of neoclassicism was Johann Joachin Winckelmann. Winckelmann began a careful study of classical antiquities by composing a grand work: the History of the Art of Antiquity, which was published in December 1763. Neoclassicism arose primarily as a counterpoint to the pageantry of the Baroque, which was rejected by the new worldview, and religion proposed by Enlightenment thought. Religion had lost the central role it had played in society for centuries, and this inevitably spilled over into art, which took on a different social meaning, acquiring a public character. In painting, religious motifs almost completely disappeared, while mythology was replaced by historical representation and bourgeois affairs. The paintings are characterized by an almost photographic realism, represented with cold colors, hard outlines, little interest in lighting effects, all of which gives a sober appearance to the paintings while keeping the viewer at a distance and no longer participating Period: 1800 - Cod. 10263 (M,S) F,SM.
