Neoclassical Paintings

NEOCLASSICAL STYLE

Neoclassical design emerged in Europe in the 1750s, as the Age of Enlightenment reached full flower. Neoclassical furniture took its cues from the styles of ancient Rome and Athens: symmetrical, ordered, dignified forms with such details as tapered and fluted chair and table legs, backrest finials and scrolled arms.

Over a period of some 20 years, first in France and later in Britain, neoclassical design — also known as Louis XVI, or Louis Seize — would supersede the lithe and curvaceous Rococo or Louis XV style.

The first half of the 18th century had seen a rebirth of interest in classical antiquity. The "Grand Tour" of Europe, codified as a part of the proper education of a patrician gentleman, included an extended visit to Rome. Some ventured further, to sketch the ruins of ancient Greece. These drawings and others — particularly those derived from the surprising and rich archaeological discoveries in the 1730s and ’40s at the sites of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum — caused great excitement among intellectuals and aesthetes alike.

Neoclassical furniture is meant to reflect both grace and power. The overall appearance of neoclassical chairs, tables and cabinetry is strong and rectilinear. These pieces are, in effect, classical architecture in miniature: chair and table legs are shaped like columns; cabinets are constructed with elements that mirror friezes and pediments.

Yet neoclassicism is enlivened by gilt and silver leaf, marquetry, and carved and applied ornamental motifs based on Greek and Roman sculpture: acanthus leaves, garlands, laurel wreaths, sheaves of arrow, medallions and chair splats are carved in the shapes of lyres and urns. Ormolu — or elaborate bronze gilding — was essential to French design in the 18th and 19th centuries as a cornerstone of the neoclassical and Empire styles.

As you can see from the furniture on these pages, there is a bit of whimsy in such stately pieces — a touch of lightness that will always keep neoclassicism fresh.

Painting of Farmyard Scene with chickens, Oil on Canvas, Signed L.J. Cruise

Located in Downingtown, PA

"Farmyard Morning": Large Antique Oil on Canvas Painting of Chickens by Louis J. Cruise, Dated 1911 A substantial and atmospheric early 20th-century oil on canvas painting, signed and dated by the noted Pennsylvania artist Louis J. Cruise (1861–1945) in 1911. This delightful genre scene captures the quiet activity of a traditional American farmyard, characterized by the artist's signature realistic style and serene composition. The scene depicts a flock of chickens foraging in golden straw outside a rustic stone and timber barn. A magnificent rooster stands alert on a hay mound, watching over hens of various breeds—white, speckled, and brown—while one chicken emerges from the dark interior of the farm building. In the background, a wooden rail fence separates the yard from a lush green pasture and distant woods, with small birds perching casually on the rails and pecking at the straw. The work is housed in a wide, impressive gilt frame. Markings: Signature: Signed and dated in the lower left corner: "L.J. Cruise / 1911". Condition: Good antique condition. The canvas is well-composed and executed, capturing the play of light on the landscape. Measurements: Frame Height: 35 inches (88.9 cm) Frame Width: 55 1/2 inches (141.0 cm) Sight Height: 29 inches (73.7 cm) Sight Width: 48 3/4 inches (123.8 cm) Historical Context: Louis J. Cruise (1861–1945) was a prolific American artist born in Bally, Berks County, Pennsylvania. He studied at the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Art Students League of New York. A member of the Philadelphia Sketch...

Eugene Berman (1899-1972) - Oil on canvas "Paludia"

By Eugene Berman

Located in NEUILLY-SUR-SEINE, FR

------------ Eugène Berman - "Paludia" (1967-1968) Type: Oil on canvas Signature: Monogrammed at the bottom center, countersigned on the back Creation Date: 1967-Rome-1968 Dimensions: 67 cm x 54 cm Frame: Rare Troubadour-style papier-mâché frame, circa 1840 Exhibitions and Provenance: Exhibition label from Galerie Lucie Weill on the back Annotations from Forni Gallery in Bologna Bibliography: Galerie Lucie Weill, The Neo-Romantics: Christian Bérard, Léonid and Eugène Berman, Pavel Tchelitchew, Paris, 1971. "Paludia" is an oil on canvas created by Eugène Berman between 1967 and 1968 in Rome. Representative of his neo-romantic style, the piece exudes melancholy and poetic introspection, with a dreamlike quality reflecting his theatrical approach to composition. The rare papier-mâché Troubadour frame, dating from circa 1840, enhances the historical aura of the work, aligning with the artist’s deep appreciation for curiosities and antiquities. Biography of Eugène Berman (1899-1972): Born on November 4, 1899, in Saint Petersburg, Eugène Berman was a Russian-born American painter and theater designer. He was the brother of Léonide Berman. He received his early artistic education in Western Europe, training in Germany, Switzerland, and France, with studies under Pavel Naumov and Sergey Gruzenberg between 1914 and 1918. Leaving Russia in 1918, he studied at Académie Ranson in Paris, under the guidance of Maurice Denis and Édouard Vuillard. Influenced by Giorgio de Chirico and Picasso, he exhibited his works (portraits and landscapes) at the Salons d’Automne and des Tuileries between 1923 and 1927. Alongside his brother, he championed a poetic and symbolic form of painting. In 1935, he emigrated to the United States, working as a theater designer while continuing to produce allegorical works. He became an American citizen in 1937. He passed away on December 14, 1972, in Rome or New York. 18th Century, Pair of Italian Neoclassical Grisaille Tempera on Paper Paintings This pair of tempera paintings on paper, was made in Piedmont, Italy, in the neoclassical era, towards the end of the eighteenth century. Each painting, with a blue grey background, is decorated with elements reminiscent of the grotesques, characteristic of neoclassicism, grisaille paintings, or with the use of the color of white and gray to simulate sculptures in bas-relief in marble or stucco. At the center of each painting stands a classic vase decorated with garlands and frames with vegetable elements, taken with goat heads with long horns. The vase is adorned with a floral decoration topped by a long vertical element that simulates a stand. Along the axis are woven garlands foliated in the center of which are represented ovoid bas-reliefs. The base of the lift, of classical and circular taste, supports two swans with outstretched wings and ends with a small circular podgy element. In the lower part of the vase is depicted a horizontal element that supports a precious folded fabric, decorated with filigree and trimmings at the edges, behind which protrudes a flowered garland. These two particular paintings are very decorative and elegant and are suitable to be exhibited alongside other works in any environment, also in boiserie. Very beautiful in copy, interspersed with other decorative objects, placed above seats, consoles, drawers, in living rooms, studies, bedrooms, corridors and entrances. Conceptually very modern, and suitable for both antique and contemporary furniture. In good condition, the paintings are presented using wooden panels...
