Biography:
Warren W. Sheppard (1858 - 1937)
Warren Sheppard, was an American marine painter, born in Greenwich, New Jersey on April 10, 1858. He lived most of his life in the New York, New Jersey area, spending summers in New Hampshire, painting seascapes off the Isles of Shoals. He learned the art of marine painting under the Dutch Maritime artist Mauritz Frederick Hendrick de Haas, who had moved to America, settling in New York in 1858, the same year that Sheppard was born. Although he worked closely with the master, Sheppard was able to develop an original style, and maintain his own views on the portrayal of nature.
In the 1890's Sheppard painted a group of Venetian scenes. From 1880 to 1899, he exhibited at the National Academy of Design were he showed many paintings, among them Moonrise on the Ocean, which commanded $1,500 in 1896.
Known for his attention to detail, Sheppard had among his clients, wealthy yacht owners, whose vessels he authentically captured on canvas. Sheppard also earned commissions for illustrations published in The Brooklyn Eagle, The New York Herald Tribune and The New York Sun.
Sheppard exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association (1874-81); National Academy of Design (New York, 1880-1899); Denver Exposition (1884, Gold medal); World’s Columbian Exposition (Chicago, 1893); and the Louisiana Purchase Exposition (St. Louis Exposition, 1904).
The highest auction record for this artist is $65,175.
Sheppard was not only a talented marine painter, but he was also known for his expertise as a racing yachts designer and navigator.
He died on February 23, 1937.

Warren W. Sheppard
Warren Sheppard was born on April 10, 1858 in Greenwich, New Jersey along the Delaware River. This town was known as a seaport and shipbuilding center since the Colonial days. Sheppard’s father was a lumber ship captain and often took his son on trips along the river where the young boy was exposed to the sea and its ways. He studied painting under Mauritz Frederik de Haas (1832-1895), but received his formal artistic training at the Cooper Union, one of the nation's oldest institutions of higher learning, dedicated exclusively to preparing students for the professions of art and architecture. Sheppard was the essence and the personification of the Renaissance Man. He was first and foremost an artist, but he was also a teacher; a yacht designer as well as a yachtsman; and a navigator as well as the author of two books on navigation entitled, Practical Navigation and A Tale of the Sea which he also illustrated. Because Sheppard was intimately acquainted with the sea and its physicality coupled with his detailed knowledge of the design of the ships and their riggings, he was able to secure a number of commissions for illustrations in several well-known periodicals of the time such as the Brooklyn Eagle, the New York Herald Tribune, and the New York Sun.
