19th Century Cuzco School Oil Painting of Archangel Raphael

About the Item

We present you with this oil-on-canvas painting from the 19th century representing Archangel Raphael who is said to guard pilgrims on their journeys and is often depicted holding a staff. He is also often depicted holding or standing on a fish, which alludes to his healing of Tobit with the fish's gall. The painting is backed on a carton and framed. The painting follows the style of the Cuzco School (Escuela cuzqueña) - a Roman Catholic artistic tradition based in the former capital of the Inca Empire, Cuzco Peru during the Colonial period, in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. It was not limited to Cuzco only but spread to other cities in the Andes, as well as to present-day Ecuador and Bolivia. The Cuzco style, thought to originate from Quechua painter Diego Quispe Tito, is known for its religious themes, absence of perspective, and vibrant colours, such as red, yellow, and earth tones, often accentuated with gold leaf. Influenced by Byzantine, Flemish, and Italian Renaissance art, Cuzco painters depicted dramatic, distorted images, often incorporating local flora and fauna. Warrior angels were a popular subject. Most works were created anonymously due to communal art traditions, though notable artists include Marcos Zapata, Diego Cusihuamán, Gregorio Gamarra, Basilio Santa Cruz Pumacallao, and Antonio Sinchi Roca Inka. The Master of Calamarca, active in Bolivia in the 18th century, is related to this school.

  • Spanish Colonial Cuzco Painting of Archangel Michael
    Located in Pasadena, CA
This is a very good Spanish Colonial, Cuzco School (Cuzqueno) painting of the Archangel Michael. The painting appears to have little or no restorations and, as such, is in remarkable condition. We have chosen to leave that painting as found as the patina highlights the depth and character of the painting. We have listed separately two complementary larger paintings of the Virgin Mary and the Archangel Michael acquired from the same estate. The Cuzco school is a Peruvian Spanish Colonial religious artistic tradition in which Incan spirituality was incorporated into Catholic iconography. These Peruvian paintings incorporate artistic forms that distinguish Cuzqueno paintings from other Spanish Colonial artistic traditions. The Jesuit order, arriving in the mid-16th century, was the principal Catholic order whose mission it was to convert the Inca to Christianity and introduce Christian iconography and European type painting techniques to the Inca capital of Cuzco. Cuzco School paintings...
