Cuzco School Oil Painting of the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus

About the Item

We present you with this oil-on-canvas painting from the end of 18th century representing the Virgin Mary holding little baby Jesus in her arms. The painting follows the style of the Cuzco School (Escuela cuzqueña) - a Roman Catholic artistic tradition based in the former capital of the Inca Empire, Cuzco Peru during the Colonial period, in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. It was not limited to Cuzco only but spread to other cities in the Andes, as well as to present-day Ecuador and Bolivia. The Cuzco style, thought to originate from Quechua painter Diego Quispe Tito, is known for its religious themes, absence of perspective, and vibrant colours, such as red, yellow, and earth tones, often accentuated with gold leaf. Influenced by Byzantine, Flemish, and Italian Renaissance art, Cuzco painters depicted dramatic, distorted images, often incorporating local flora and fauna. Warrior angels were a popular subject. Most works were created anonymously due to communal art traditions, though notable artists include Marcos Zapata, Diego Cusihuamán, Gregorio Gamarra, Basilio Santa Cruz Pumacallao, and Antonio Sinchi Roca Inka. The Master of Calamarca, active in Bolivia in the 18th century, is related to this school. Please note some minor losses and structural damages due to its old age.

We present you this charming piece, titled 'Nu et verdure fond rouge', which translates to 'nude and greenery on red background' in English. An oil painting on canvas, it is signed by the artist, Robert Delval (1934-) and dated 2008. The use of colours, perspective, depth, and form in this artwork demonstrates the influence of the artistic styles of Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard, which Robert Delval saw as artistic inspirations. Robert Delval, born in 1934 in Montmartre, Paris, cultivated his artistic skills amidst the street painters of his childhood neighbourhood, drawing inspiration from books and museums. At twenty-five, he embarked on a European and American journey armed solely with brushes and notebooks. Upon returning to France, he divided his time, spending spring and summer on the Mediterranean coast and autumn and winter in Megève, selling his watercolours to passers-by, including the likes of Françoise Sagan. One of his small gouache pieces, depicting a view of the Luxembourg Garden, caught the eye of André Roussard, a Montmartre framer...

An exceptional early Cuzco School painting, naive depiction of the Holy Family, presented in a contemporary wooden frame. The Cuzco or Cusco school was a Roman Catholic artistic tradition that began in the 1500's in Peru, following the Spanish conquest and subsequent attempts by the Spanish invaders and missionaries to implement the Catholic faith and associated customs upon the Peruvian people. The school was established in the ancient city of Cusco which had previously been the capital of the Incan empire. Bernardo Bitti arrived in Peru in 1583, and with his arrival the acceleration of Cuzqueno Art flourished. During his two stays in Cusco, Bitti was commissioned to make the main altarpiece of the church of his Order, replaced by another after the earthquake, and painted some masterpieces, such as The Coronation of the Virgin, currently in the museum of the church of La Merced, and the Virgen del pajarito, in the cathedral. Cuzco School paintings are marked by their baroque influenced imagery and the subjects of the paintings shown with light focused upon them. Cuzco art...
