A 19th C watercolour by Henry Martin Pope of a moonlit castle ruin by a lake.

About the Item

Henry Martin Pope was an exceptional 19th century Midlands artist who exhibited widely. Later he founded the Birmingham Arts Circle whose elite members included Walter Langley, Edwin Harris, William Banks Fortescue, in particular, he and Langley were good friends and often visited Newlyn, Cornwall, U.K together. Henry Martin Pope is a highly regarded artist whose works are displayed in many museums and public galleries, including the Birmingham Museums Trust, Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, Y Gaer Museum and Art Gallery, and Dudley Museum. This large and exceptional watercolour is of a most unusual subject as it is a night scene set with the moon rising above an ancient fortified castle ruin which is located on the edge of a lake. The view was painted during the winter months with stark trees in the foreground with silhouetted branches hanging over and reflecting in the dimly lit water. This picture is most likely a view from Wales as it was purchased with our other example which is a view of the pass at Llanberis, Snowdonia, North Wales. Again, in this painting, the artist has cleverly used only three colours to produce this mystical and moody work of art. It is signed H Pope in the bottom right hand corner. This painting retains its original limed oak frame with hand floated glass. It has a new gilt slip and has been resealed on the reverse. Sizes including the frame: Height 80cm x width 55cm x depth 3cm
