About the Item
This elegant 19th-century portrait presents Charlotte Baroness von Hirschberg, a noblewoman born in 1792. She is shown with ringlet curls framing her face and braids tied into a chignon above her head—a refined hairstyle typical of aristocratic women in the Biedermeier period. She wears a beautiful gown with a lace frill and a double strand of pearls across her wide neckline, and a red sash bearing a ladies’ order, likely the Russian Order of Saint Catherine.
On the reverse, a handwritten inscription notes:
"Copied from the original in Weihersberg" – Charlotte Baroness von Hirschberg Weihersberg, née Baroness von Hirschberg-Weihersberg, canoness of the Order of St. Stephen in Augsburg – "born July 13, 1792 † October 5, 1857."
The inscription is a valuable provenance detail that reinforces both her identity and the historical authenticity of the work. Charlotte held the honorary title of canoness in the Order of St. Stephen, a prestigious role often granted to noblewomen before marriage. It allowed her to maintain high social standing while embracing religious duties, reflecting the customs of her time.
The painting is a slightly pastose oil on canvas, with visible brushstrokes that add texture and depth. Created around 1870, it shows signs of age and is framed as a pendant, meant to be displayed together with the matching portrait of her husband, Adam Franz Bernhard, Baron von Hirschberg (see other listing).
This European rare aristocratic portraiture would be a remarkable addition to your interior.
