About the Item

This late 19th century oil on wooden panel offers a captivating glimpse of historic Florence, expertly rendered with meticulous architectural detail and atmospheric quality typical of realist style Italian vedute (landscape view) paintings from the 1800s. This captivating oil painting on panel captures an iconic view of Florence, offering a panoramic view of the city from the banks of the Arno River. Dating from the second half of the 19th century, this work exemplifies the landscape paintings popular among Grand Tour travelers. At the heart of the composition stands the famous Ponte Vecchio, Florence's undisputed symbol. Commissioned by the Medici family, the bridge still houses the city's most renowned jewelers, continuing a centuries-old tradition. In the foreground, the Ponte Santa Trinita with its distinctive white marble cartouches connects the right bank, now a preferred area for high-end fashion shopping, to the Oltrarno on the left bank, famous for its artisan workshops and antique shops. The artist has skillfully depicted scenes of daily life along the riverbanks. Women can be seen washing clothes in the Arno, with a prominent washerwoman figure, and a boat navigating peacefully on the calm waters. These details add a touch of vitality and authenticity to the scene, offering a glimpse into the Florence of the era. The city's skyline is punctuated by its most important noble palaces, including the majestic tower of Palazzo Vecchio, the Medici family's original residence before their move to Palazzo Pitti. The artist has masterfully rendered the city's atmosphere, using a palette of earthy, natural colors that imbue the scene with the warm luminosity typical of Tuscan light. The oil on wood panel technique is executed with expertise, capturing architectural details and light with sensitivity. The painting is enclosed in a delightful black lacquered ebonized wood frame, finely carved with molded profiles, which complements and enhances the work. In the lower right corner, there is an illegible signature which, while not allowing attribution to a specific author, confirms the piece's authenticity. The painting's dimensions, interesting yet relatively modest, are typical of artistic souvenirs of the time, created to satisfy the demand of Grand Tour travelers eager to take home a tangible memory of their visit to Florence. The clothing of the depicted figures, along with the painting style and type of view, firmly place this work in the second half of the 19th century. This painting is not just a picturesque representation of Florence, but a true historical document that captures the essence of the city at a crucial moment in its history, as it was becoming one of Europe's most coveted tourist destinations. This oil on panel represents a unique opportunity for collectors and art lovers to own a piece of Florentine history, a work that embodies the spirit of the Grand Tour and the timeless beauty of one of the world's most beloved cities. 20th Century Italian Acrylic Abstract Urban Expressionist Painting on Canvas
By Andrea Spinelli
Located in Firenze, IT
The present work of art titled "Urban Abstraction (ripped off posters)" is part of a series of paintings that the artist composed in the 1980s and 1990s inspired by the observation of the urban reality of those years. The artist take the cue from his walks in Florence, both in the center and in the suburbs, and by the observation of billboards and posters scattered throughout the city. The mass of information, colors, messages and words were carried on the canvas with acrylic colors, ideally reconstructing the tears and overlaps of all the information and advertising contained on these huge sheets of paper that invade our cities. The geometric lines are overlaid with jagged lines, overlaps and color dripping and also the choice in the color palette, with different shades of white, gray, rose, orange red and blue helps in rendering the result of the tears and ripped paper. The result is a beautiful multicolored modern abstract canvas, both aesthetically and ethically, with many rich layers of color, texture and expression in which the artist leaves his own message. The painting is housed in a simple modern white lacquer wood frame. Andrea Spinelli...
