19th Century Italian Painting of Ladies in Waiting

About the Item

Antique Italian painting of ladies in waiting, Naples school, second half 19th century, an oil on wooden panel realist portrait of two Neapolitan courtesans idling in an open window, with title inscribed on the reverse "Dolce Far Vente" - Sweets For Sale. Mounted in the original carved, ebonized and parcel gilded frame. Naples was a major stop on The Grand Tour taken by young aristocrats and affluent Brits and Americans in the 19th Century. The city was famous for its ancient monuments and nearby ruins, bustling port city life, and extravagances as noted in this painting. In accord with its robust reputation, Naples was often the final stop on the Grand Tour and travelers typically brought home Pompei relics, portraits and paintings like this. The painting and frame remain in very good condition, gently showing their age. Measures: 13 in H x 10-3/4 in W overall.
