19th Century Seascape with a Brig in High Seas

About the Item

19th Century Seascape with a Brig in High Seas, signed illegibly and dated 1857, an oil on canvas painting featuring a Brig laboring in heavy seas under reefed topsails and top-gallants, another schooner under sail in background. The painting has a bold and dramatic sky over a dark and moody sea. Signed in an elegant hand (which I can not quite decipher) and dated 1857 in the lower right. The painting is possibly English, though could easily be American as well. The painting is in great condition with fine craquelure (which appears stronger in the photos than it does to the eye). Measures: 9-5/8 in H x 13 in W Framed: 12-3/8 in H x 16 in W.
