About the Item
A very good 19th century watercolor depicting a pastoral landscape with haycarts, mounted with archival acid free materials and signed bottom left.
Measures: 6.75” x 9.75” (sight). Framed dimensions, 10.75" high x 13.75" wide x .75" deep.
John Atkinson (1863-1924) was a highly regarded British landscape artist working in watercolours, oil & tempera.
He was born in Newcastle, he attended classes at the Newcastle School of Art where he is said to have briefly studied under Wilson Hepple.
In 1900 he become a full time professional artist after establishing a reputation from frequent exhibitions at the Berwick Club, Newcastle. Atkinson exhibited widely throughout his career including the Royal Academy (RA), Royal Scottish Academy (RSA), the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours (RI) as well as at many Provincial galleries and exhibitions.
He is listed in 'The Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists, Up to 1920' by H.L. Mallalieu.
