20th Century Spanish Party Painting Oil on Canvas by Riccardo Pellegrini

About the Item

Riccardo Pellegrini (Milan 1863 - Crescenzago 1934) Spanish party before the bullfight Oil on canvas, 29 x 39 - with frame, 45 x 55 cm The painting, given the signature, is the sure hand of the Milanese painter Riccardo Pellegrini. Born in Milan 1863, he trained in the romantic Milan of the late nineteenth century. Subsequently, he continues his studies in Rome and above all in Naples, where he is a pupil of the Neapolitan painter Domenico Morelli (Naples 1823 - Naples 1901). He rarely exhibited in Italy but always successfully: as in Milan in 1883 at the Fine Arts Exhibition at Palazzo di Brera. His travels are important for him, which allow him to meet new realities and deepen his artistic knowledge, and so we find him first in England in France and finally in Spain, to which he will remain strongly attached. In 1912 in London he won the Muller house competition for the illustrations of Alain's "Gil Blas" - René Lesage, a French literary newspaper, in which important novels such as Germinal and the work of the famous Emile Zola were published. He was then commissioned the illustrations for a Spanish edition of Don Quixote and thanks to his skills as a skilled draftsman he collaborated with the main European magazines. In his vast pictorial production there are landscapes, genre and costume scenes characterized by a disengaged tone and pleasant subjects, sometimes inspired by the gypsy world known in Spain, as in the case of the work presented here. natural is enriched by numerous figures dressed in traditional clothes and horses richly adorned with fabrics and colored garlands. The attention is catalyzed by the figure of the central white horse, an artifact that makes the composition, also static, with more dynamism. In the background, made with quick and rapid brushstrokes, a snow-capped mountain closes the scene. The pictorial conduct is characterized by a texture of rich and full-bodied brushstrokes that define the foreground, while Pellegrini adopts a more fluid and free draft for the figures placed in the background. Painter with great pictorial skills, he uses bright and clear colors, spreading them in spots and following a careful study of lights and shadows. His vibrant and effective colouristic ability, which makes his canvases pleasant, has earned him numerous honors and acknowledgments, including a personal exhibition set up in 1929 in the rooms of the Bottega della Poesia in Milan. Some of his most important works are kept in important Italian and foreign museums: the Flower Market in Spain in the Modern Art Galleries of Piacenza, the rustic courtyard at the Carrara Academy in Bergamo, Sunday outdoors at the Civic Museums of Pavia, Sur la promenade des Anglais, Notes from Spain, Remembrance of Seville, View of Seville, his sketch Malta which is in the Berlin Museum of Art, La ridda in the Gofort Museum in Stuttgart, The kiss of the sun which is kept in the Goupil Gallery in Paris.
