About the Item

A striking composition by American artist Vernon Grimmer, this painting features a partially nude woman seated in profile against a rich magenta curtain. The subject gazes to the left, her expression calm and introspective. Draped in green fabric around her lap, she is rendered with a sensitive, stylized touch characteristic of Grimmer’s figurative work. Behind her unfolds an abstract figural tableau—three figures, seated and standing, appear beside a serene, mountain-side lake. The juxtaposition of intimate foreground and surreal background invites layered interpretation. Presented in a sleek black Lucite frame. Vernon Grimmer studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and trained in architecture at the Armour Institute of Technology (now the Illinois Institute of Technology). During the Great Depression, he contributed to public mural projects and later, during World War II, worked with the Austin Company designing battleships, aircraft carriers, and submarines. In the post-war era, Grimmer expanded his design work to include residential homes, motels, schools, and commercial buildings.
