About the Item

A remarkable vision of brotherly utopia, with a hint of homoeroticism, this beautiful study was painted by British artist George Frederick Hinchcliff in preparation for a proposed mural. The artist attached his own note about the piece, noting that it is executed in colored wax, watercolor and Indian ink, though the mural itself would use alabastine (a form of plaster) instead of wax. Hinchcliff was known for a series of paintings that depicted paired-off male figures in woodsy settings, but we think this is his best work. The artist is not well known, but two photographic portraits of Hinchcliff by Philip Brain are in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London. (Dimensions include matte; dimensions of the painting are 9.5" high by 11.5" wide.)
