About the Item

A large French 19th century oil on canvas (laid down on a masonite) "Les progrès de l'amour dans le cœur d'une jeune fille" The Progress of Love: The Lover Crowned, after Jean-Honoré Fragonard (French, 1732-1806). The original work of this subject by Fragonard was painted for the Château du Barry. It depicts a young couple sitting in a lush overgrown garden with a sculpture of a sleepy cupid behind them, the girl holding a floral wreath above the young man's head while a sketching artists draws them to one side. (The canvas has been professionally cleaned). Within an ornate gilt and gesso frame. Unsigned, circa 1880. Measure: Canvas height 62 1/2 inches (158.8 cm) Canvas width 44 inches (111.8 cm) Frame height 79 1/4 inches (201.3 cm) Frame width 61 inches (155 cm) Frame depth 4 1/2 inches (11.4 cm).

    Repaired: Canvas laid on board. In paint touch-ups throughout. Additions or alterations made to the original: Canvas has been laid down on a masonite to keep it safe. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor fading. A truly very impressive and decorative painting. The canvas has been recently been cleaned and re-varnished. Some age Craquelure and minor light age wear and with vibrant colors. Under UV light it does not appear to have any in paint touch ups.
