Royal House Antiques
Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this stunning original circa 1860-1880 Italian Grand Tour Oil on Board painting of Roman Temple Ruins with a the Marcus Aurelius Corinthian pillar statue in the background
This painting is of a known and highly coveted scene, if you have a look on 1stdibs you will see this exact painting listed for over £20,000 which is slightly larger
Grand Tour pieces were purchased during the Victorian era by graduated students who wished to increase their knowledge of the world, they travelled to the wonders of the world and collected souvenirs which would then be placed in their library or study as conversation pieces, usually these would be small statues and on rare occasions, oil paintings like this. They are a window in to another time both for the social standing of the upper class and for the location
This piece is exceptionally well executed, the colours, the strokes, everything has clearly been worked at the hands of a very confident and competent painter.
Condition wise I can't see any issues with the actual painting, the frame is aged with losses

19th century, oil on canvas, Italian View of the forum Boario of Rome
The fine painting represents the Piazza della Bocca della Verità, located in the Ripa district, in the area of the Foro Boario, the oldest market in Rome (Italy). On the right you can see the fountain called "dei tritoni" which was built in 1717 on a design by architect Carlo Bizzaccheri. The fountain has a star-shaped bathtub, in honour of the commissioner, the Pope Clement XI...
