"Arrival" Oil on Canvas Painting by Vicente Puig

About the Item

Large oil on canvas painting, titled "Arrival" in an original octagonal silvered wood frame. Depicting Spanish ship arriving in the New World. Signed "V.Puig" at the bottom. The painting scene takes place in the era of America's exploration, in the 15th Century. Composition is built from point of view of native man and woman, looking to the ship under the shadow of palms. Their tribal dresses are decorated with primitive accessories. The faces of the couple are turned away from the painting viewer and focused on the horizon. The geometrical center of the painting includes a sail with a red cross. European discoverers used this symbol on the sails of the caravels, carracks and other ships involved in the exploration of the seas. ABOUT VICENTE PUIG Vicente Puig (1882 - 1965) was a pioneer of Modernism in both countries of the Río de la Plata and a teacher of outstanding painters of the time. On October 11, 1882, Puig was born in the Catalan town of Mataró, province of Barcelona, Spain. He immigrated to Uruguay at an early age and became a legal citizen. In 1906, he went to Europe to study at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts with Professor Franz von Stuck and later in Paris with Professor Fernand Cormon. He returned to Uruguay after a brief term of employment in Madrid and Rome, where he committed himself to his art and teaching. In his later years, he painted and taught in Montevideo and Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he died on June 25, 1965. Vicente’s works were recognized with numerous awards and the permanence of his works in various museums. In 1918, together with his disciple Antonio Pena, he obtained the First Prize in the Contest for decorative paneau at the Montevideo School of Medicine. In Argentina, he received the Gold Medal at the Exhibition of Argentine Decorative Art (1932), the Gold Medal at the Municipal Hall (1927), the Foreign Artists Award (1926), and the Foreign Artists Award at the Argentinian Spring Hall (1930). Vicente Puig was declared a “Favorite Son” of Barcelona in 1950. Puig devoted himself mainly to portraiture and the human figure, although he was also a landscaper and decorator. Although Puig’s style was influenced by classicism (in scenarios and composition), its main characteristic was “planismo” (Spanish, flatness), developed after the chromaticism of the Fauve painters and other Post-Impressionists. The objects are represented through the clarity of the forms with the use of pure color on the entire surface.

Oil Painting on Canvas by Yang Qian
Located in Atlanta, GA
Title: Hiding in The Jungle Artist: Yang Qian (Chinese; B. 1959) Medium: Oil on canvas Years: purchased circa 1990 A Palm Beach, FL collection An early work by Yang Qian during his sojourn in Florida, USA. The series delved into art history with reinterpretation and overlaying symbolism. The painting is set in a moody tropical jungle at night and is a clear reinterpretation and a dialogue between Henri Rousseau's The Dream and Paul Gauguin's La Femme du Roi. Although the two French artists were contemporaries, they may have not intersected in their personal lives. Pioneering and ground-breaking for their time, their work were celebrated posthumously and served as inspiration for later artists.
