Late 19th Century French Ormolu Mounted Marquetry Cabinet by Henry Dasson

About the Item

French cabinet in a curved shape with a cupboard base and nine drawers. It is adorned with tulipwood and kingwood inlay veneers, and ormolu mounts. A pill-out slide is covered with teal velvet. The drawers are decorated with colorful marbled paper inside, and the faces are made of gilt-stamped leather. Marked with a stamp on mount verso: 'HD' as well as two signatures at the cabinet verso, stating: "Henry Dasson." Henry Dasson (1825-1896) was a renowned nineteenth-century designer of gilt-bronze mounted furniture. Unlike most cabinetmakers of the time, Dasson began his career as a bronze sculptor as a result, one of the distinguishing features of his work is the high quality of his bronze and, more specifically, the chiselling. Dasson displayed a variety of works in the Louis XV and XVI styles, as well as pieces of his own modified eighteenth-century design, in the Paris Expositions Universelles in 1878 and 1889.

In 1871, Dasson purchase Charles-Guillaume Winckelsen business and remaining stock. Dasson exhibited at the 1878 and 1889 Paris Exhibition. He displayed Louis XV and XVI styles as well as pieces of his own modified eighteenth century design. The exhibits in 1878 included a table entirely in gilt bronze, purchased by Lord Dudley. Martin Carlin (ca 1730 – 1785) was a Parisian ébéniste, born at Freiburg, who was received master at Paris in 1766. Carlin worked at first in the shop of Jean-François Oeben, whose sister he married. He set up independently in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, an unfashionable quarter of Paris, where few of his wealthy clientele would have penetrated.
