About the Item
An attractive watercolour painting of Brighton’s RNLI life boat house by its architect, C.H. Cooke, the sturdy rectangular building sited below the promenade with the bows of a life boat emerging from one end, with ladies in crinolines with parasols, men in top hats, fishermen and their boats drawn up on the beach, signed bottom left. The mount inscribed in polychrome with gilt arabesques ‘Presented to Almeric Seymour. M.D., by the, Committee of the Brighton Branch of the National Lifeboat Institution, for his great services as Honorary Secretary in obtaining the new life boat & boat house. Inaugurated Oct. 1st 1867.’ English, dated 1867.
Footnote: Charles Henry Cooke (1829-1888), was an architect, draughtsman and artist. A print after his design for the Godolphin Schools in Hammersmith, published in The Builder magazine and dated 1861, is in the Wellcome Collection. He was best known for his work with the RNLI, designing over 200 lifeboat houses over a 30 year period, many of which are still extant in some form or another. He was a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and exhibited at the Royal Academy 5 times between 1862-1877. He lived in London for the majority of his career, despite his designs being used throughout Britain and Ireland. The lifeboat house remained in service until 1886, when new groynes on the beach made it necessary to relocate the lifeboat to a site between the two piers. The Institution agreed to take over the two arches being constructed under the Western Esplanade and surrender the present lifeboat house to Brighton Corporation.

Joseph Newington Carter: The loss of the Scarborough Lifeboat Amelia, 1865
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
This dramatic watercolour shows only the bow and the stern of Amelia as she is perilously close to being dashed against the sea wall with a wave completely swamping her amidships. Some of her crew have been washed out of the boat and would-be rescuers are wading along the promenade towards her bow. To her right, the schooner Coupland is rolling dangerously in huge waves. Scarborough Spa and crowds of onlookers are clearly visible through the storm. Signed J.N.Carter, 1865, Torquay. English, painted in 1865.
The attempted rescue of the schooner Coupland by the lifeboat Amelia on November 2nd 1861 is one of the most memorable and tragic in Scarborough lifeboat history. The 32 ft. long, ten-oared, self-righting Amelia, on her maiden voyage, went to the rescue of the Coupland crew, with disastrous results. She was dashed to pieces against the harbour wall and two of the crew were lost, while others had to swim or be pulled ashore by rescuers wielding ropes. Three of the shore based rescuers, Lord Charles Beauclerk, William Tindall and John Hiles, also lost their lives. Eight Board of Trade Medals for Gallantry in Saving Life at Sea were awarded along with six RNLI medals and monetary grants.
Joseph Newington Carter (1835-1871) was influenced by W. M. Turner and is known predominantly for his dramatic and compelling seascapes in oil and watercolour. His father, Henry Barlow Carter...

19C Aquatint Engraving of the Quay at Waterford
Located in Dallas, TX
Presenting a lovely 19C Aquatint Engraving of the Quay at Waterford in Waterford city in Ireland.
This engraving has been hand embellished with aquatint color(s) and is from Ireland circa 1820-40.
It features a scene of the Quay or Port of Waterford from circa 1820. We are basing this upon the attire of the figures in the engraving and the tall ships.
It features Reginald’s Tower (still located at the Waterford Quay to this day). Georgian Quay buildings, a number of moored tall ships and row boats, barrels, horses and carts, women and British soldiers.
The engraving was professionally reframed and matted in Dallas in the 1980’s and the rear of the frame says that it was “Museum Mounted and Matted”. The frame has a lovely Grecian pattern around the front.
