‘Victoria and Albert a lovely vessel’ Watercolor Royal yacht by Harold Wyllie
About the Item
A working watercolor of the Royal yacht by Wyllie. Arguably the most beautiful paddle steamer and yacht ever built.
“Titled Victoria and Albert a lovely vessel.”
Overall size 17” x 21”.
Harold Wyllie was the eldest son of William Lionel Wyllie. He studied under his father and shared his fascination with naval history. Harold Wyllie was particularly interested in the development of the sailing ship and devoted himself to in-depth research eventually becoming a recognized expert on the subject. His works were exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Marine Artists, and he served as Honorable Marine Painter to the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1934 as well as Vice President of the Society of Marine Artists in 1958. His dedication to naval history resonates in his sensitivity to detail and accuracy in his maritime paintings.

Oil on canvas within a gilded frame and accompanied by five related letters. English, circa 1810. Footnote: Robert Prideaux died aged 36 in 1818 but in his short life he managed to rise rapidly through the ranks as a naval surgeon. The Naval Chronicle Vol. 19 (1808) records his appointment as a surgeon, aged only 26, on the cutter Sprightly and that he moved to the Lily by the end of the same year. In 1809, a member of the crew of the vessel Polyphemus was involved in a drunken incident that culminated in him being sick on the quarter-deck of the Lily whilst both vessels were docked at Port Royal in Jamaica. This led to a Court Martial appearance for one Joseph Fountain, the Master at Arms...Category
