Bas-relief China, 1900 the Eight Immortals and the "Crossing of the Seas."

About the Item

Bas-relief China, 1900 the Eight Immortals and the "Crossing of the Seas." Chinese bas-relief depicting the Eight Immortals and the "Crossing of the Seas." Bas-relief depicting THE EIGHT IMMORTALS and the "Crossing of the Seas." Wooden panel with lacquered and carved bas-relief. Measurements: 320 cm x 180 cm Period: early 20th century The bas-relief depicts THE EIGHT IMMORTALS and their "Crossing of the Seas." The eight immortals are called Baxian in Chinese: The term Ba (八) means eight, while Xiān 仙人, is a synogram composed of person (人) and mountain (山). The global translation is "immortal." It was in the 12th century that among various Chinese peoples the mystical figure of the Eight Immortals began to be discussed, eight mystics of Taoist philosophy. They are represented by a man, a woman, a young person, an old person, a rich person, a poor person, an aristocrat, and a proletarian. For centuries, they have provided multiple themes for all artists and artisans. One of the most frequent shows them in the "Crossing of the Seas." Legend has it that the Bāxiān set out on a journey to participate in a banquet organized in the Celestial Palace in Tibet, guests of the Golden Mother, a Taoist Fairy. To undertake this journey, they were instructed by the sea deity Lu Yuan to give up their usual means of transportation: the cloud. They then walked on the sea using their magical objects: staffs, swords, musical instruments, fans, etc. They experienced a thousand adventures during this crossing, and each of these immortals had to demonstrate their own courage and personal power to succeed in the endeavor. The significance of this iconography lies in the exhortation to respect and value one's own personal characteristics, allowing them to flourish, and to do the same, that is, to value and respect the personal qualities of others, because only through this can adversities be overcome and great success achieved. Even today, the expression "The Eight Immortals cross the sea" is a widely used proverb to describe someone who performs a miracle with their special abilities. No. 13350 M,S

Chinese Reverse Glass Painting of Taoist Immortals, c. 1900
Located in Chicago, IL
Popularized during the Qing dynasty, reverse glass painting requires an artist to essentially work backwards, starting with details and shading before adding color and form. Lending the finished work a subtle three-dimensional effect, this exacting technique doesn't allow for any corrections, and is only revealed to its full effect when the glass pane is turned around. This example dates to the late 19th century and depicts the Taoist immortals He Xiangu and Cao Guojiu. Said to have attained immortality through their studies of the natural world, the Eight Immortals each represent a different condition in life and impart blessings of prosperity and longevity. The charming scene is likely one of a set of...

Chinese Mythical Immortal Screen Painting, c. 1850
Located in Chicago, IL
Since the 12th century, people in China have used folding screens and doors to partition and decorate their homes - the vivid scenes backing the screens added life and color to a room. This 19th-century painting is delicately brushed of gouache and ink on fabric and was originally part of a set of eight backing a wooden screen in northern China. The figure depicted is one of the mythical Eight Immortals of Taoism. Said to have attained immortality through their studies of the natural world, each of the Eight Immortals represents a different condition in life and together they impart a blessing of prosperity and longevity. Depicted here is immortal Lan Caihe, the patron saint of florists and gardeners. Standing atop a lotus leaf in open water, they hold a gardening hoe in one hand and a basket for flowers...
