About the Item

A half-length portrait of a young lady, her costume à la Turque and wearing a double strand of large and lustrous pearls. She is deep in somewhat pensive thought, her right hand resting lightly against her chin, her left hand gently clasping the neck of a pottery flask, identifiable as a black figure Greek amphora. Dating from the late 18th or possibly the early 19th Century, this oil on canvas is mounted within a beautiful carved and giltwood frame which retains its original contemporary gilding, now carefully conserved and cleaned. A little further background: In the eighteenth century Britain’s wealth grew through trade and the demand for portrait paintings came from circles beyond the court and aristocracy. The major Georgian portraitists, Reynolds, Gainsborough, George Romney, John Hoppner and Thomas Lawrence, had a much wider clientele: doctors, lawyers, merchants, and indeed anyone who had proved successful in any field. The Swiss-born Angelica Kauffmann was an artist of international training and reputation. She was escorted by her artist-father to study the Old Masters in the major Italian cities. Time spent with the English community in Rome convinced her to come to London in 1766 where she joined Sir Joshua Reynolds's social circle. Her reputation for portraiture and history painting led to her becoming a founder member of the Royal Academy in 1768. As a woman, she was excluded from the life class, and developed her own brand of history painting which focused on female subjects from classical history and mythology. Sir Joshua Reynolds was superb in his ability to invest his sitters with an air of tradition and importance by posing them in just such a manner i.e. in attitudes made famous by the masters of the past. And Angelica Kauffmann understood that connection very well. Indeed, the pose of the sitter in the painting under discussion is reminiscent of a 17th Century work depicting The Persian Sibyl (the prophetic priestess presiding over the Apollonian oracle) by Renaissance artist, Guercino (1591- 1666). Guercino employs a similar pose in The Libyan Sibyl 1651, an oil on canvas painting first recorded in the Royal Collection in 1790 – prints and copies of such works would have been known and admired by the London based portrait painters, including Angelica Kauffman who may even have seen the original in Rome. As a reference to the portrait style of Angelica Kauffman, refer to NPG 430, her self-portrait in the Primary Collection of the National Portrait Gallery, circa 1775
