Montgomery's acclaim grew with his monumental murals for Sears Company across various states from 1939 to 1962, each spanning 150 to 200 feet and depicting historical scenes. Notable works include a mural for Allstate Insurance in the 1950s, showcasing the automobile age. His legacy lives on through preserved murals, such as the one at Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, NC.
Commissioned for portraits of esteemed figures from corporations like Sears Roebuck, Motorola, and Allstate, Montgomery's diverse portfolio includes the iconic portrait of University of Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne. His artistry is further celebrated through multiple awards, notably the Municipal Art League award from the Art Institute in 1941 for his painting "Sharon at Twelve."
Montgomery's studio in Evanston, Illinois served as his creative sanctuary for sixty-five years until his passing on December 16, 2001, at the age of 96. His profound impact on 20th-century art is evident in his versatile works across various mediums, capturing the essence of American life with a unique idealistic touch.
