Set of Six Chinese export birds Paintings on Pith Paper, 19th Century A refined series of six Chinese export paintings depicting birds amidst delicate floral compositions. Executed with mineral pigments on pith paper, a traditional support often mistakenly referred to as “rice paper,” these works showcase exquisite craftsmanship and a subtle mastery of naturalistic rendering. The paper, derived from Tetrapanax papyrifera, has a silky, translucent texture that enhances the finesse of the brushwork and the softness of the colors. Each scene portrays various bird species perched on flowering branches or on the ground, interacting with their surroundings. The vibrancy of the plumage and the meticulous detail reflect the legacy of Chinese naturalistic painting, where nature is both subject and poetic expression.
