About the Item

Christian Rohlfs (1849-1938) “Seascape in the fall” Creation: 1937 Pastel and water tempera on paper Estate stamp with work number and confirmation by Helene Rohlfs on verso Titled and dated Dimensions: 62 x 79 cm (frame) 39.5 x 57.5 cm (sheet) The painter and graphic artist is one of the most important representatives of German Expressionism. It was not until the age of 60 that he came to terms with this style and found his way to a powerful painting in which color and form symbolically condense his personal perceptions. He sought to achieve a pictorial correspondence between perception and imagination by means of a pure, transparent and intensely luminous coloration. He therefore preferred the technique of water tempera and watercolor. Rohlfs intermittently attended the academy in Weimar from 1870 to 1884. As a recognized history and genre painter, he was involved in 1877 at an exhibition at the Weimar art school. From 1884 he worked as a freelance painter. At the end of the decade, he developed a lyrical naturalism in parallel with the Barbizon School and French Impressionism. At the invitation of K. E. Osthaus, he moved to Hagen in 1901, where he moved into a studio in the Folkwang Museum. In 1902, he was subsequently awarded the title of professor at the Weimar Academy. He now studied works by Renoir, Signac, Seurat, Cézanne and, above all, van Gogh. In 1905, he met Nolde, with whom he formed a long friendship. In 1907 he became a member of the Düsseldorfer Sonderbund and in 1909 of the Deutscher Werkbund. Around 1910, he turned to Expressionist stylistic devices, without completely abandoning the depiction of nature. In 1911 he joined the New Secession and in 1914 became an associate member of the Free Secession in Berlin. In 1924 he was elected a member of the Berlin Art Academy and in 1925 an associate member of the Düsseldorf Art Academy. From 1927, he traveled to Ascona every year. As a “degenerate” artist, he was banned from exhibiting in 1937. The Christian-Rohlfs-Museum was founded in Hagen in 1929 and the Christian-Rohlfs-Archiv at the Osthaus Museum Hagen in 2011.
