Karl Otto Götz (1914 Aachen - 2017 Wolfenacker)
Color lithograph "untitled", signed and dated, created 1967, framed behind glass
Dimensions: 53.5 x 41 cm
Karl Otto Götz is one of the most important representatives of German Art Informel and is known for his gestural-abstract painting. In the early 1950s, he developed his typical painting style by developing a squeegee technique: In quick strokes, he applied dark paint to a light background with a brush and then partially removed it with a squeegee.
In this way, he captures the colors in waves on the canvas or paper.
From 1932 to 1935, Götz attended the Advertising School and the School of Arts and Crafts in Aachen. During this time, he painted his first abstract compositions, as a result of which he was banned from painting from 1933. He did military service from 1936 to 1945. In the post-war period, he once again devoted himself entirely to his artistic work and continued to develop his abstract painting. In 1949, he was the only German artist to become a member of the CoBrA artists' group, which had already been founded in 1948; this gave him important contacts to the European artistic avant-garde. From 1959 to 1979, he taught as a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy.
Götz showed his work at important exhibitions, such as the documenta in 1959 and the XXXIV Venice Biennale in 1968. He also received important prizes, such as the "Junger Westen" art prize in 1948, the "Westphalian Critics' Prize" in 1956, the State Prize for Painting of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate in 1996, the Golden Ring of Honor of the City of Aachen in 2000 and the Federal Cross of Merit in 2007. In 2013, the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin dedicates a comprehensive retrospective to him. Karl Otto Götz died in 2017 in Wolfenacker in Rhineland-Palatinate.
