About the Item

A riot of color and movement, much like the experience of walking around the circus in its heyday in 1930s America, this scene by Iver Rose depicts a barker at his podium, positioned in front of an expanse of red-orange canvas, with crowds of people below and American flags flying above. The brilliant palette and the high-energy scene brings the circus experience to life in an era when this form of entertainment has almost disappeared from small town life. Rose is best known for his work to bring attention to the plight of workers in Depression Era America. Closely associated with Chicago and the north shore of Boston, Rose worked under the auspices of the WPA in the 1930s, painting in Chicago and later moving to Rockport. The medium is gouache on paper. (Dimensions include frame; visible painting is 20.25 inches high by 12.25 inches wide.).
