"Cocktail Party", Sophisticated Art Deco Painting by Patterson

About the Item

This sophisticated view of a 1920s cocktail party -- probably taking place on the upper levels of an Art Deco tower in New York or Chicago -- was painted by Robert Patterson, one of the few artists at the time -- along with Stanley W. Reynolds and Eduardo García Benito -- who could capture the impossible elegance of wealthy Americans before the Depression hit. The artist presents three groups of partygoers, all dressed in tuxedos and haute couture, the men impassive and unreadable, the women more animated and expressive. Like his peers, Patterson worked for Vogue, as well as McCall's and Ladies Home Journal. The painting is watercolor on paper. Patterson's signature is in the lower righthand corner. Dimensions include matte and frame.
