About the Item

Fascinating pair of still lifes with fruiting subject, painted in oil on canvas and dating from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. The two works, rich in balance and decorative taste, depict compositions of fruits-including pears, plums, peaches, and apples-arranged on a neutral plane and bathed in warm light that enhances their volumes and textures. The restrained but refined style, combined with the calibrated use of shadows and the soft drafting of color, recalls the pictorial tradition of northern Italy, particularly the Lombard and Piedmontese schools, where still life was treated with finesse and measure, often intended for bourgeois or aristocratic settings. Both canvases retain their coeval carved and silver-plated wooden frames, which are of elegant workmanship and still in excellent condition. The silvering, slightly patinated by time, adds a precious and understated tone, perfectly in keeping with the character of the works. The conservative condition is good: there are slight marginal falls in the pictorial film and a loss of tension in the supports, related to the presence of fixed, non-adjustable original frames. There is no extensive repainting or invasive restoration. Light, targeted conservation intervention-such as re-tensioning the canvases and fixing the most fragile areas-can be recommended to improve legibility without compromising the authenticity of the whole. The dimensions of the canvases alone are about 43.5 x 35 cm; with frame, each painting measures about 49 x 40 cm.
