About the Item
Immerse yourself in the raw, vibrant energy of Pervis Young's unique artistic vision with this captivating painting. This piece captures a dynamic basketball scene, a recurring motif in Young's work, rendered in his signature expressive style. Four silhouetted figures reach upwards, their forms conveying a sense of urgent motion and communal spirit as they vie for a deep red basketball. Young's use of bold, gestural strokes and a limited color palette – predominantly grays, blacks, yellows, and hints of green – creates a powerful visual impact, reflecting the raw, unfiltered essence of urban life he so poignantly portrayed.
The painting's focus on basketball is particularly significant. Young often used basketball as a metaphor for aspirations, struggle, and the collective experience within the urban environment. The elongated limbs and reaching figures, rendered in a simplified, almost primitive style, evoke a sense of striving and yearning. The composition, with its upward movement, draws the viewer into the scene, making them feel part of the action. The inscription "Yeng" (likely a phonetic spelling of "Young") in the upper right corner adds a personal touch, authenticating the work and connecting it directly to the artist.
This painting is executed on a found or repurposed piece of wood, a common practice for Young, who often utilized unconventional materials. The edges of the wood are visible, adding to the work's raw, unrefined aesthetic. The paint application is thick and textured, showcasing Young's spontaneous and intuitive approach. The condition of the painting is consistent with the artist's style and materials, with some wear and imperfections that contribute to its authenticity and character. Please examine the provided images carefully for a detailed view of the condition.

Born November 8, 1902 in Kecskemet, Hungary, the child of Mihaly and Maria Ladanyi, Emory Ladanyi moved with his family to Eger, a town famous for its good wine. He studied at the High School of Science and Art.
At fifteen, he discovered anatomy in a textbook and began to consider a career in medicine, and was accepted into the Medical School of The University of Budapest to become a medical student. He received his doctoral degree in 1927 and did his residency in dermatology in the largest hospital in Berlin, then one of the most prominent dematology centers of Europe.
In Berlin, he was especially impressed by the works of Edvard Munch, forerunner of German Expressionism, who exerted a lasting influence on his work. Following medical residency in Vienna, he was also impressed by the works of Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Kokoschka.
In 1928 he returned to Budapest to continue postgraduate studies, also advancing his art education. His many friends were among the avant-garde poets and writers of that time.
In March 1929, he arrived in New York. June of that year, he passed the medical boards, and in September received his license to practice medice in the State of New York.
Outside of the medical profession which enabled him the livelihood to continue to paint, he moved exclusively in avant-garde circles of New York City. He was a close friend of the composer Edgar Varese. Others of his circle were poet Kenneth Patchen...
