About the Item

Viggo Johansen (1851 Copenhagen-1935 Copenhagen) “Three Seagulls” Oil on canvas, mounted on cardboard Signed/monogrammed lower left 42 x 55 cm Viggo Johansen was one of the first artists to arrive in the sleepy fishing village on the northern tip of Jutland, where he joined forces with other artists from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts to found what would later become the Skagen art colony. Although he did not graduate from the academy, he established himself as one of the most important artists of Danish modernism. Viggo Johansen's artistic talent became apparent at an early age. After taking private lessons with C.V. Nielsen and receiving praise for his work from Wilhelm Marstrand, he enrolled to study art at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Although Johansen did not complete his studies, he achieved his first exhibition successes in 1876 and 1877. He made his breakthrough by selling a work to the tobacco manufacturer Heinrich Hirschsprung. At that time, he was staying in Hornbæk and initially painted small-format scenes from the domestic life of fishermen. After his marriage in 1880 to Martha Møller, Anna Ancher's cousin, he continued in the Eckersberg school with scenes from family life. His stay in Dragør and Amager, as well as further study trips within Europe, helped him to consolidate his individual expression. From 1890 onwards, he settled permanently in Copenhagen with his family. In 1901, a dispute arose between him and PS Krøyer, after which he did not visit Skagen for several years. In 1887, he became a member of the Stockholm Academy of Arts and in 1906 was appointed professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. From 1911 to 1914, he was appointed director of the academy. In the 1890s, Johansen was one of Denmark's most famous painters. In his works, he explored late Romantic genre painting, incorporating elements of Impressionism and Realism. During his studies, he initially focused on figure painting, but over the course of his career, he switched to genre painting, inspired by a wide variety of places and personalities. His initial fascination with Dutch painting gradually waned as his career progressed. From 1885 onwards, he exhibited regularly in Paris, where he was inspired by the colors of Claude Monet, which were particularly evident in his use of color in the work Christian Bindslev er syg. At times, his painting technique bordered on pointillism. He also found inspiration in the works of other artists within the Skagen colony. He is particularly known for the subdued lighting effects in his interior scenes. In addition to his small-format paintings—which depict scenes from family life—he also painted numerous landscapes, primarily of evening skies. For one of his most important works, Aftenpassiar from 1886, he received a medal and an offer to purchase the painting from the Statens Museum for Kunst. Johansen participated in countless exhibitions during his career and won numerous awards for his work. In 1886, he received the Thorvalden Medal, among other honors, and in 1889, he won a gold medal at the World's Fair in Paris. He also received awards at the World's Fairs in Vienna and Chicago, as well as at the international exhibitions in Berlin and Munich. In 1884, 1915, and 1919, he was also awarded the Order of Dannebrog. His study trips were subsidized by the Academy itself as well as by the Raben-Levetzau Foundation.
