About the Item
A cubist oil on canvas by listed artist Harry Hutchinson Shaw, (1897-1989). A vibrant scene characterized with crimson depicts the San Miguel de Allende in Mexico; a colonial-era city in Mexico’s central highlands known for it's baroque architecture. Signed in the lower right corner. The piece is set in a beveled wooden frame painted black with gold inner trim.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Harry Shaw became a painter, illustrator, art educator, drawing specialist and block printer. During his career, he lived in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Louisiana and Florida.
In Florida, he was a teacher at Miami University, and the Art Museum School of Clearwater. From 1942 to 1959, he was Associate Professor of Art at the University of Southwestern Louisiana.
He preferred to paint with oil, watercolor and acrylics and published a bound collection of sixteen large linoleum block prints titled Quest, with eight scenes of "Coal Country" and eight scenes of "Pueblo Land". A limited edition of 300 copies was produced by the artist, seven volumes of which are currently listed online in libraries, including the Library of Congress.
While he was never a long-term resident of New Mexico, it is clear from the subject matter of many of his artworks that Harry Shaw often visited the Southwest. One oral account has it that a number of his Arizona scenes were published by the Ford Motor Company in a small touring book. He is known to have painted scenes of Taos, New Mexico.
Harry Shaw's artworks are held in the collections of the Akron Art Museum, the Canton Museum of Art, and the Library of Congress.
