About the Item

A watercolored painting attributed to Edwin St. John, a painter known for his watercolor landscapes. The painting features a scenic depiction likely inspired by a historical or picturesque location. Edwin St. John (1875-1962) was known for his skill in watercolor painting, typically focusing on landscapes. His work often captures the essence of the scenes with a delicate and nuanced approach to color and light. The scene likely depicts a historical or fictitious castle perched atop a cliff overlooking a body of water, reminiscent of scenes from coastal regions possibly in Italy or a similar setting. The castle appears to be in a state of ruin, suggesting it could be an ancient site valued for its historical significance. - Color Palette: The painting utilizes a soft, muted palette that conveys the tranquility of the scene. The use of light blues, greens, and earth tones helps create a serene and atmospheric quality. - Light and Atmosphere: The artist has skillfully captured the light, likely of early morning or late afternoon, which softly illuminates the castle and the landscape, enhancing the tranquil and timeless feel of the scene. - Detail and Texture: The detailing in the watercolor is subtle yet effective, with gentle washes that define the textures of the rocky cliffs and the ancient masonry of the castle without overpowering the scene. The reflections on the water add a sense of depth and calmness.

Antique English Painting “Lake Nemi, Italy” '1865' by John Wilson Carmichael
By Carmichael
Located in Shippensburg, PA
The present work is an interesting scene for a number of reasons, including importantly its time of execution in 1865. It was during a period of his retirement to Scarsborough following time spent in Italy, sketching the major lakes and landscapes in the northern part of the country. Likely executed in his studio using the preparatory sketches made of the area during these travels, the scene captures an idyllic view of Lake Nemi during sunset. It is rich in fall colors as light cascades through the haze of clouds and strikes the turning leaves of the trees, casting long shadows along the meadow grasses. The blue waters of Lake Nemi are cool and reflect the landscape bordering the shore. The focal point of the scene is a family of three that is taking the day to hike the local countryside, breaking along a rock to enjoy the lovely views. The work is signed and dated 1865 in the lower right corner and the original frame retains a label on it from John Hay & Son, an art dealer, framer and gilder in John Wilson Carmichael...

"A Hazy Morning on the Welsh Hills" by Benjamin Williams Leader
By Benjamin Williams Leader
Located in Wiscasset, ME
Oil on artist panel, signed and dated lower left. It measures 19.75" x 22.75" including the frame, which is likely the original. Benjamin Williams Leader RA (12 March 1831 – 22 March 1923) was an English landscape painter. The inspiration for these early works was the countryside around Worcester itself, "the cottages, farmhouses, lanes, hedgerows and churches, so exceedingly picturesque and beautiful". However, Leader did not finish his course of studies at the R. A, nor did he need to – his paintings proved to be in great demand by wealthy buyers and he achieved an enviable degree of commercial success within only a few years of his first sale. In 1857 he changed his name to Benjamin Williams Leader to distinguish himself from the many other painters with the surname Williams. In autumn of that year he travelled to Scotland, and painted A Quiet pool in Glen Falloch...
