Antique European School oil painting by listed American artist Edwin Turner.
A thatched roof farm house with a young woman and chickens.
Original oil on canvas. Dimensions 44" x 29". The period frame measures 53" x 38".
Signed and dated in the lower left corner.
Bio
Born in Branch County, Michigan in 1854
Though an all around artist with an excellent reputation, he excelled as a portrait painter. As such, he was employed to do portraits of the city's major benefactors, Charles H. and Julia Hackley, and these paintings were hung in the Hackley Library in 1888. He also did portraits of other prominent individuals. About that time he also established a studio in Grand Rapids.
Hackley, taking a personal interest in Turner, sent him to Paris in 1891 where he studied under William Adolphe Bouguereau, an academic artist at the height of his influence.
The newspaper obituary in the Grand Rapids Evening Press of June 19, 1899, stated that after receiving art training in Europe, "He had been steadily improving in his work with the brush and his pictures were coming to more and more merit and receiving widespread attention."
